Humble was first settled in the early 1800s when the city’s top industry was timber. The region sprang to life with the discovery of oil in 1902 and by 1905 the largest producing oil field in all of Texas could be found here. The Humble Oil and Refining Company originated in Humble, though we now know it as Exxon. The local economy got another boost when the Houston Intercontinental Airport (now George Bush Intercontinental Airport) opened here in 1969. This quaint city spans less than ten square miles and is still an active oil producer today. You’ll enjoy mild winters in this region, and a family-friendly vibe is present in the annual Good Oil Days Festival that offers games, food, arts and crafts, and vendors. More to explore in this great city includes:
-
Old MacDonald’s Farm. This 15-acre outdoor park will delight youngsters with 12 petting zoo barns, pony rides, a train ride, hay barn, playground, duck pond and swimming pool.
-
Lindsay/Lyons Park and Sports Complex. An impressive 136-acre site with lighted baseball, softball and football fields, soccer fields, playgrounds, and a sensory garden for sight-impaired children.
